Today, Facebook is acquiring Giphy as a part of Instagram’s team. This acquisition will leave a huge impact on other apps and services like Tiktok, Snapchat, Tinder, and so on. Hence, Facebook is planning to merge the GIF library into Instagram and many other apps just for better access. In a survey, it has been discovered that almost 50% of the GIF traffic and usage comes from Facebook only. And rest of the 50% comes from Instagram, so they are thinking off to merge the Giphy with Instagram. Tech-giant Facebook has said that the only reason behind integrating them (Instagram and Giphy) is to give better and faster access to the users. As we all are familiar that, Instagram and Facebook both are huge platforms for content creators and artists to showcase their talents and business purposes.

As per the survey, 700 million peoples are constantly seeing and sharing GIF every day. And most of the responses on GIF content are coming from some popular apps – TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter and so many. Now, the overall functioning of Giphy like sending and receiving on the internet will be changed completely forever as Facebook is acquiring Giphy.

Many of the companies who use Giphy regularly may not be able to use them as they had been using it. It’s like that these services didn’t want to work on a Facebook named platform. They don’t want to be dependent on such major competitors like Facebook, because they have been facing many issues consisting of privacy and cyberbullying.

Facebook announced that developers will still be able to use Giphy as before the acquisition and it appears that you can still be able to use GIFs as you can use earlier before the acquisition. People will still be able to upload GIFs. Authorized people like developers and API partners will have access to Giphy’s API.

Adverse Effect of Acquisition

It is important to keep in mind that there are no tracking bots, cookies, or anything else. This does not have any user tracking mechanism which can affect its user’s privacy in an adverse way. The Giphy API can see your search item but it can’t see your data. There can be a chance that Facebook could change the working process of Giphy as time passes.

And apps or services that are using by Giphy now could drop support of those services at any moment in nearby time. These apps have been using Giphy’s service for a long time, Tiktok, Tinder, Trello, Snapchat, Mailchimp, Telegram, Slack, etc.

Vishal Shah, vice-president of Instagram’s product has stated in the blog post, “We’ve used GIPHY’s API for years, not just on Instagram, but in the Facebook app, Messenger and WhatsApp. GIPHY will continue to operate its library (including its global content collection), and we’re looking forward to investing further in its technology and relationships with content and API partners. People will still be able to upload GIFs; developers and API partners will continue to have the same access to GIPHY’s APIs, and GIPHY’s creative community will still be able to create great content.”
